A book called “Love” by the theologian Diogenes Allen opens with a remarkable epigraph from St. John of the Cross: “Love consists not in feeling great things, but in having great detachment and in suffering for the beloved.” So jarring to consider: suffering, not enjoyment!

A display in Northfield’s Bridge Square today honored Indigenous cultural heroes. Good to educate and give honor. Especially since it’s still less than a year since the city formally acknowledged it stands on the homelands of the Wahpekute and other Dakota Nation bands.

Northfield sidewalk art is by no means timeless; over time, the poems’ physical manifestation through lettering on the street inevitably wears away. Yet here is a poem that couldn’t be more timely, glimpsed on a glorious September afternoon near Carleton College.

Small-town water towers are wonderful Americana. This is Princeton's, viewed from the parking lot of the M Health Fairview clinic where I got my first vaccination dose today. The big yellow sun seems spot-on because, after a brutal year of pandemic, a new day is dawning.
