regulus knew what an horcrux was, meaning he had made his research prior and came to the conclusion that voldemort had made at least one horcrux, the one he found, why would he make such research on voldemort if it wasnt to use against him?
i'm not saying he never followed him, he did and was one of his most loyal follower, but the version where regulus' discovery of the truth about voldemort "immortality" pushes him to betray him makes sm more sense to me
and it's almost much more interesting, we see it as a "he did it for kreacher only" bc we learn about it through kreacher's memories, but his letter doesnt focus on kreacher at all, kreacher was a cataslyst but he wasnt the sole reason behind his decision to betray voldemort
