The "chicken crossing the road" joke is funny because the question is about illocutionary intent, but you get back a response about perlocutionary effect.

New episode with @eliburnstein about his new (and fun) book: The Dictionary of Fine Distinctions! There may be delving. We might delve. Anywhere podcasts are gotten. becauselanguage.com/97-dictionary-… @UnionSqandCo
Such a great paper from @tmarke and @ReinoehlUta. The main idea was very intuitive, once I grasped. Sorry — once I grasped *it*. You can't drop words out of metaphorical constructions. You must include them. You have. Sorry — you have *to*. (Even something as vacuous as that.)

Talking to @eliburnstein about his new book THE DICTIONARY OF FINE DISTINCTIONS! Episode coming soon.
I obsessed over this book — Comfortable Words by Bergen Evans — and wanted to find out all could about the history of the things we say and write. I was always in the 400s section of the school library.

Looks like this design is pretty popluar! People are ordering it, and you can too. Do you want to be out of sync with the cool kids? Of course not. Shirts, stickers, and more. redbubble.com/shop/ap/428416…
I’ve decided to end the debate right here: people have been saying “less” instead of “fewer” since Anglo-Saxon times. Here’s a sentence from the Old English 𝘋𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘢𝘵𝘰, which says: “The more you say, the less people believe you,” where the sense is “fewer people”↓

Answer: neither. "Are" is a linking verb or copula. You need an action verb for it to be passive or active. "Used" doesn't count here because it's just modifying the fins. This would be passive, though: "Yabba Dabba swim fins are used by only a small number of swimmers."
Is the sentence below written in active voice or passive voice? Yabba Dabba swim fins are the most widely used swim fins.
Some people say you shouldn’t wear band shirts after age 30. This is strange because you should actually exclusively wear band shirts after 30.
There’s an art to distilling these to the absolute minimal necessary text. The human brain can’t comprehend how stupid these things are without practice.
all universities make claims about addressing inequalities and welcoming diversity - but many universities also offer accent modification programmes aimed at 'non-native' staff members which at their core are designed to eradicate linguistic difference 🙃

@focusfronting "How dare these young people CHANT, and make noise that people, like, me, who spend upwards of 4 hours a week on campus, have to hear?! The entitlement!" It's really no wonder people dislike elite academics like this. I mean, not all of them. But there's definitely a type.
@focusfronting "Freedom of speech with no limits!" "From the river to the sea, Palestine must be free!" "No, not like that!"
Variation and change in word meanings are not distortions. Please learn something about the science of language.
I don't deny that trans people exist. I object to the statement that a trans woman is a woman. This is a distortion of language and science. youtube.com/watch?v=zzTLmJ…
An interesting parallel phenomena: 1. Latin dingua 'tongue' replaced by lingua, for unknown reason; 2. Middle Chinese zyet 舌 'tongue' replaced by lei 脷 in Cantonese and southern Sinitic, also for unclear reason. There seems to be pressure for mapping /l/ to 'tongue'.
An <expat> is a white immigrant who thinks <immigrant> is a dirty word
still don’t get how an “expat” is different from an immigrant
all of this is true. conservatives tend to strongly believe that control over language is control over reality. they can semantics you out of existence (conceptually) which licenses suppression and euphemizes abuse
No. Hear me out. He just perfectly articulated why they’re “offended” by the term. They insist we do not exist and using this term suggests otherwise. He’s admitting that their cause is eliminationist. Believe people when they tell you what they are.
i rear children and work jobs. i think the demonstrations are amazing and necessary. how about u leave me the fuck out of ur weird little fantasy
Here's a thing that I believe is too-little understood among the chattering classes: Most Americans look at big demonstrations with fuzzy demands ("defund the police," "free Palestine") and wonder "how the hell do they have enough free time to do that?" People who work jobs,…
