@nazneenrajani They’re not as popular as decoders for sure, but ModernBERT (a new encoder model) is getting about a million downloads a month. BERT is still at 48M download a month, 10x more than Qwen 3 8B (~5M) Seems like people are still using them!

Given the constraints of not making any lawsuits worse, gtp-oss is pretty much what I expected from a new OpenAI open release. 20b was better than 30b-a3b qwen 3 coder or thinking on tasks I use them for. Still need to try 120b.

I've had preview access to GPT-5 for a couple of weeks, so I have a lot to say about it. Here's my first post, focusing just on core characteristics, pricing (it's VERY competitively priced) and interesting details from the GPT-5 system card simonwillison.net/2025/Aug/7/gpt…
One thing making it hard to evaluate how good gtp-oss is in practice is the need to support the new harmony chat template or tool calling. For example, Roo Code's Claude-based approach currently doesn't work with gpt-oss at all. Using ollama directly results in better code.
If Anthropic keeps randomly cutting off access to their models, they run the risk of losing their enterprise customer base to someone who is a more stable partner. In contrast, Microsoft is quite happy to have Xbox competitor Sony use the Azure cloud.
