Windows 3.0 turns 30 today. It introduced Program Manager, Solitaire, VGA support, virtual memory, and a new "3D" look (which basically means shadows on the buttons) This 1990 version of Windows received ample third-party software support and became quite popular
I couldn’t resist writing about Windows 3.0 and what made it special for How-To Geek: howtogeek.com/674574/windows…
@benjedwards More importantly, it's also the 30th anniversary of the Hot Dog Stand theme 😎
@benjedwards Microsoft tweeted the original 3.0 ad some days ago to commemorate its anniversary.
@benjedwards @stevesi Pretty incredible that Windows went from this to XP in ~10 years. The era of the 90s desktop PC will always be a time I look to with nostalgia (Windows 3.1 was my first).
@benjedwards I have found memories of installing this with 14 floppies...
@benjedwards @stevesi 'VGA support', lol. In those early days I did a one-byte hack of cmd.exe so that "mode 80,43" would actually do "mode 80,50" to get those sweet sweet extra lines.
@benjedwards Didn’t windows 2 386 have virtual memory? Trying to remember.
@benjedwards Back in those days 3D was miracle to have. In any kind of way 😀
@benjedwards @cpeterso VGA support! cc @sfdxpro 🧓🏽👴🏽👵🏽
@benjedwards @dosnostalgic Reversi > Minesweeper. I have maintained this for 30 years. Change my mind.
@benjedwards These days I long for buttons in UIs again. Shadows or no shadows.
@benjedwards paintbrush was amazing! I draw "vectorial-3D-polygon" and pixelart with it!
@benjedwards used the German version of 3.0 until I got WFW couple of years later, it was a good little OS
@benjedwards @stevesi I am still amazed on how much you could run on what is now a microscopic amount of memory.
@benjedwards @mainframed767 What was the shell prior to “Program Manager”? Wasn’t program managers name a play on OS/2’s “Presentation Manager”?
@benjedwards happy anniversary dear @Microsoft please return reversi back
