I guess the point is that it might only take a few hundred conversions to justify the cost. With all the users specifically signing up for the cheap/free version, it can make sense as a relatively inexpensive funnel. I think time is better spent on real features.

You wouldn't have this experience with an API. UIs built on top of your API would be growth-hack-free. It makes the messaging pointless as the market moves towards software agents and custom UIs.

Following pareto principle, why not focus on only offering the full cost plan? Your users only get the best UI, no silly upgrade messaging, no upsell funnel to manage. Time better spent by marketing, engineering, design on delivering the best product.

I'm skeptical of this growth-driven strategy to show disabled widgets in the UI with upgrade-to-unlock messaging. Taken to its extreme, the UI would always be filled with this regardless of what the customer pays unless it's the highest cost plan.
