Please RT: If there's an old unmaintained software that is prohibitively slow and is only one of its kind do you not benchmark your new tool against it? How to properly address reviewers and frame this issue in paper?

@bioalgorithmist @OmicsOmicsBlog Unmaintained != unusable. As long as it is usable, I would try it. If too slow, I would say something like: our method took X hours but that method took >Y days and unfinished, so we only presented our results.
@bioalgorithmist You can always pick a “small” problem where the runtime is shorter and then do systematic comparisons. But “maintained” vs “unmaintained” is subjective and not likely relevant (you’re comparing algorithms, right?)
