If you want to make a political argument for slamming the door in the face of refugees, you’re free to do so. What you’re not free to do is make a Christian argument along these lines.

@rafaelshimunov Walgreens CEO confessed on an earnings call that their losses weren’t from shoplifting as he had claimed before midterm elections. It was due to fines or settlements for discrimination or labor violations, can’t recall the exact details.

The Hebrew Scriptures marked a revolution in social ethics in terms of our duties to the poor. Christianity took this one step further, holding that God is especially close to the poor. But we have gone one step back with libertarianism, which says the poor are on their own.

If I had to pick one thing journalists miss in police reporting, it's that cops have tried to surveil, infiltrate, and violently crush every major social, economic, labor, environmental, and racial justice movement since 1900. It's what they spent their budgets on in every city.

In an entire lecture on "inequality," Chetty did not once mention capitalism or the concept of political power. It was a window into how lost someone can become when they are so used to asking the wrong questions, and when so few people have the safety to to confront them.
