Today we @yimbymelbourne drop our new research note, demonstrating the bias of opt-in community consultation.
It will shock no one who’s paying attention, but our sample of 15 consults across six councils found a massive overrepresentation of homeowners and older folk.
“In Finland, the # of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
Density with amenity means putting higher numbers of residents in best of environments -such as facing parks/public spaces.
Here our project to replace 100 houses with 600-840 park-front apartments.
@ 6 storeys, levy to improve street & park, drop wires, +cycles, calm traffic 1/2
I'd like to submit the following designs for inclusion into NSWs new pattern book for streamlined approvals everywhere
And can we also please have a Victorian pattern book too
New Zealand's Minister of Housing and Urban Development argues we need to "destroy the idea that the economy is linked to house price growth."
Correct in my view. interest.co.nz/economy/134218…
Woohoo lets go! Cheap housing for everyone! Our household wealth should be reinvested in business and jobs not sitting idle supporting a roof over one’s head.

"These results support models in which competition erodes option values ..."
Put simply: Policies that enable more apartments increase competitive pressure between landowners, which in turn increases the rate of development.
If you consider yourself a fiscal conservative, understand this:
There's a pervasive myth that we car owners cover the costs of the roads we use (planning, design, construction, maintenance). The truth is we're the recipients of massive infrastructure bailouts from taxpayers who…
The Planning Institute of Australia's response to YIMBY Melbourne's research demonstrates exactly why our planning system is broken.
We never said that there are too many planners. We said that the sector's productivity has collapsed. 👇
Los Angeles upzoned one (1) single family neighborhood next to a transit stop. The homeowners sold their houses at huge profits and now 600 new homes are being built.
With any luck, we will repeat this win-win-win hundreds of times across the city and state after SB 79 passes.

We’re proud to announce that Open Philanthropy is providing a $500,000 grant to support our work to fight for housing abundance in Australia.
This is an important milestone in our mission to help make Melbourne a more sustainable, livable and affordable city.
Wyoming, Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Nebraska, and Mississippi have a combined population roughly equal to that of LA County.
They get 16 senators. LA County gets 0.25.

We have a choice in how we form the places we live.
Do we do the hard work of leading with beauty that nourishes our souls and calls on our higher values, or do we simply choose the lowest hanging fruit because it's easier.
For my part, the hard work is always worth it.
The state govt have announced that they are further increasing the density of the Camperdown dive site: up from 500 units to 577, with 220 for essential workers.
They’re calling it ‘The Joinery, Annandale’.
We’re so proud that our pressure has resulted in such a good outcome.
Which would you prefer:
✅Getting more homes and keeping Piedimonte's Supermarket
❌Blocking more homes and closing Piedimonte's Supermarket
The choice seems obvious...

Live scenes from the laneway (one of literally dozens within walking distance) that a small cohort of wealthy Fitzroy North homeowners want to preserve for the future of young people who will never be able to afford to live in the area anyway.
