I have a friend who is stuck in retail and wants to move into development. I'm trying to help any way I can. What are some useful resources, courses & websites for learning? Please RT for reach. I'll start with @2ndCareerDevs by @kyleshevlin for insights and motivation 👇
Thank you to everyone who shared and replied to this. Every single tweet has been super helpful and supportive. I am going to collate all of this information for him and just want to thank everyone. Have a great Friday & weekend! 🤟
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin Udemy is by far one of the best. Courses I recommend incl. Web developer bootcamp by Colt Steele or Zero to Mastery by Andrei Neagoie. @CodeEverydayio 😌 @freeCodeCamp for free resources & articles of people's coding journeys to stay inspired as one transitions into tech.
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin Happy to personally talk to your friend. Send me an email to [email protected] or just download the @Career_Karma app and send me a message. We got your back!
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin @FlatironSchool is the way! Proud grad here. They are really good also now you have the online course with a @WeWork desk if you can’t be on campus. They have amazing job positioning to close the circle.
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin I’ll also recommend @freeCodeCamp to start. If they’re interested in the bootcamp route, @FlatironSchool has been an amazing experience and I’m happy to answer questions. Also @CodeNewbies is a wonderful support org w/ a twitter chat every Wednesday at 9pm EST.
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin @freeCodeCamp is great to see if you even like coding and learn the basics. Then learn to navigate an IDE, command line, and GIT. Then on to paid courses like @udacity or specific @udemy courses by folks like #coltsteele #bradhussey #joeparys #robpercival and #joesantosgarcia
@codebytom @kurtiskemple @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin They should definitely check out @shiffman's The Coding Train: youtube.com/channel/UCvjgX…
@codebytom @kyleshevlin @2ndCareerDevs I’ve used @udacity and it’s great. I also helped build microsoft.com/learn and it’s cool. 😎 I would recommend starting with a goal or project and learning the steps along the way to complete your goal. 😀
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin I can't recommend @LambdaSchool enough. I'm a full time web dev student. If you or your friend have any questions feel free to reach out. And good luck!
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin Tell them about @LambdaSchool . They offer PT/FT and you get a full stack education providing the most in demand skills in the market right now. Plus you don’t pay a penny until you get a job if you choose the ISA. It also provides networking and a robust CS curriculum.
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin @freeCodeCamp. Org to study, as well as @MozDevNet . Then just read other documentation sites like reactjs. Org. If you want to study with others for free next month @w3Develops. Org will launch remote study groups which goes through the above resources.
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin All tutorials by @traversymedia. They can start off going through his HTML & CSS and other playlists on YouTube or purchase his Udemy Courses
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin Can’t stress enough how amazing @treehouse is for beginners. Great place to start, easy to understand, AMAZINGLY supportive platform.
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin If your friend wants a structured self paced approach I would recommend either @freeCodeCamp or @FlatironSchool has an amazing and affordable community version of their curriculum which is only like $150 a month.
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin If he is unsure about which route to take (Python or Javascript), I wrote this: dev.to/kchawla_pi/get… For bootcamp, I have seen good twitter feedback about @LambdaSchool
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin 1. For learning - @udemy is amazing. It's super cheap - like 10 bucks. Steven Grider's React courses are amazing. 2. For inspiration / Examples checking out what people on HackHive.com are building. (I'm one of the creators of HackHive)!
@codebytom @codingCommander @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin I took the plunge to change career from event coordinator (business administration) to be a Java programmer, at the age of 30.Built a demo (showcasing android, desktop & web apps) self taught.Get tips from my journey inc. action plans to help with ANY career change goal @APLACC
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin Watch and code by @gordon_zhu has been incredibly helpful. One course called practical JavaScript is free and he has some paid content as well.
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin Advanced CSS and SASS course by @jonasschmedtman on udemy is incredible! So after he got basics of html and css I definitely recommend that one! 💯🔥
@codebytom @kurtiskemple @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin @codebytom If he cant find the motivation to stick to a side project or learning system after working all day ( which is beyond understandable ). Get him an internship and have him quit retail/take off retail for it. He'll be in the deep end but he will learn incredibly quickly
@codebytom @2ndCareerDevs @kyleshevlin I would recommend you and your friend attend a local meetup together regularly if possible. Even if the content is initially over his/her head it can be incredibly inspiring to meet and talk to other people about their journey and projects, and you can re-explain concepts later.
