If I could go back in time, I would have learned a lot less Windows and a lot more Unix
@codinghorror sometimes I envy the people who know a lot about Windows. It seems more obscure and harder to me.
@codinghorror @englishm_ it doesn't help that much to have done it before, I did a whole lot of both, but things are constantly changing
@codinghorror I made the switch from windows to OSX in 2009. Best decision ever.
@codinghorror i don't no I dont no I dint know
@codinghorror If I could go back in time, I'd take a sports almanac with me.
@codinghorror sometimes Unix feels sinister: man find ... man tail ... man kill
@codinghorror my happy path was Amiga Dos > Slackware > Debian > Ubuntu. Missed Windows entirely.
“@codinghorror: If I could go back in time, I would have learned a lot less Windows and a lot more Unix”
@codinghorror At some point in time, early 90's, I got to think that staying on the Unix side would become my professional death sentence...
@codinghorror all knowledge is good knowledge. That's why I believe. :)
@codinghorror I say learn what you need when you need it. That’s probably why you, and I and thousands of others learned Windows.
@codinghorror the grass is always greener...
@codinghorror I'm actually quite pleased to have had the opportunity to learn both. Makes you more appreciative of the things that work well
@codinghorror I was studying minix at uni in 1990. But 25 years of business programming has left me 99% windows educated.
@codinghorror but you wouldn't be who you are today otherwise...
@codinghorror Windows is a toxic blight upon the world of computing. It should be eradicated; it is essential malware. As is OSX / iOS.
@codinghorror thanks for sharing Jeff Atwood, have a great Thursday :) (insight by commun.it)
.@codinghorror Remember when Windows was simple and Unix was complicated?
@codinghorror @jogbert I would also have wished that I started using Linux/Unix on the desktop way earlier. There’s much to gain from that
@codinghorror @wegrata the problem is that every step of the way, it was easier to learn the windows way. But it leads to the wrong ending.
@codinghorror I learned working at Bell Labs when Unix young and ran on DEC minicomputers. Never expected it to be on my handheld computer 😐
.@codinghorror Without Windows, one cannot truly appreciate Unix.
@codinghorror @howtogeek you got all the time in the world to make amends
@codinghorror what I found is that Unix knowledge holds better over the years All my past 2003 Server and XP sysadmin skills are useless now
@codinghorror Never Too Late Begin with the easy part: not learning Windows
@codinghorror Dunno man. My learning a lot of Linux/Unix is hurting pretty bad. Wishing I knew more Windows.
