As you grow, you develop a relationship to wanting — and to all the things you want. Become attuned to this process and consider why you want the things, or people, that you do.

When you hurt others, you diminish their ability to trust. You take away their faith that good people exist. Sometimes, depending on how badly you hurt them — you even change their physiology. Become self-aware & take responsibility for the hurt you cause.

Become an emotional grown-up. This means knowing when to put someone else’s needs before your own. It’s about taking responsibility, communicating openly, and showing respect. It’s about leaving the drama at the door and vulnerably connecting.

Shame is a natural part of our experience, but it can play insidious roles in our relationships. Shame is the reason we don’t speak up about our needs. Fight shame by loving yourself enough to tell your partner what you need. They cannot divine your needs on their own.

We all have unconscious fears that those who love us cannot contain us. Containment refers to feeling held and protected, physically and emotionally. Brainstorm ways that you can convey to your partner — I am strong enough to hold all of you.

Replaying conversations gives us a false sense of control. It is a self soothing mechanism that helps us regulate our anxiety. We go over details so we can try to be prepared and anticipate someone being upset or disappointed in us in the future.

Be there for your partner when they need you. This is more complicated than it sounds. Knowing when your partner needs you is an intuitive exercise — and attuning yourself to their needs requires consistent work & attention.

It takes two people to make a relationship work. You can’t carry the weight of a relationship on your own. Find someone who will carry the responsibility of a relationship with you.
