Magdalene Laundry are incomplete with many only registered with the State in 2013 decades after their deaths. Gran’s niece was then in an Industrial School having lived with her single mum for 6 years. I look forward to finding her record. 3/3

And the 1926 Census is pivotal from a mother and baby homes point of view as well. It will document numerous mother and baby homes that we know about now, for the very first time. Tuam, Bessborough, the Bethany Home, Kilrush Nursery and Pelletstown, just to name a few...

3/4 My adoptive mother facilitated a childhood of #abuse by my #paedophile grandfather. She willingly delivered me to him every week, from the age of 8, for 4 years, to be #raped. The State failed to ensure that adoptive couples were fit to adopt.

2/4 The medical report had only 2 vague questions on it. This is the my mother’s report. My adoptive mother struggled with her mental health. Her GP lied & wrote ‘No’ to the 1st question. As a result I was adopted by a woman who was cruel & unloving.

🧵1/4 My adoptive mother was deemed fit to adopt by the state. In Ireland in the 60’s the only eligibility criteria to qualify to become adoptive couples were - 1. Financial security 2. Catholic 3. No criminal record A medical report from the GP was only required after 1970.

The Good Shepherd Sisters have announced there’s work underway to update the gravesites of the High Park & Sean McDermott Street Laundries. There’s 327 names due to be added. 3 newly-discovered graves belonging to the congregation have also been found. goodshepherdsisters.ie/news-events/pr…
