I'm too exhausted to dig myself a bunker. The longest day is drawing to an end. Lying down beside a log to spend my first night in France.
Troops 1 and 8 are stationed in the field. I was met by astonished cries from my comrades. They thought I was no longer among the living.
The outskirts of Amfreville are a mess. Scattered everywhere are small carts and horses, discarded belongings and rotting bodies.
In front of me, two green berets emerge from a trench. It's the No 4 Commandos! They tell me I'll find the road to Amfreville 100m away
I can't remember the name of the village where we were due to stop. I feel lost, isolated and alone. #dday7
I can see fields covered in gliders, rammed into every position! I have to tear myself from the scene, which I would gladly have sketched.
In a field running along the river, three black gliders with white roundels were half broken up. They must have had a rough landing! #dday7
I've got to go for it. A para throws a smoke bomb. I hear two bullets hit a beam, which resonate like a bell. I am over - safe and sound
The soldiers don't waste time: 'Hurry, we'll throw another smoke bomb. Go across the bridge now. They won't fire for a few seconds.' #dday7
I arrive at the first of two bridges over the Orne. Five or six parachutists are firing non-stop. I ask them what is happening.
The Commandos reach the strategic bridge over the canal at Caen, code-named 'Pegasus'. #dday7
Smoke is blocking my vision. I can vaguely make out a river and hear explosions. The war is really happening here. #dday7
A little obelisk is laying broken on the ground - all that is left of the monument to those who had fallen in the Great War. #dday7
If it weren't for the planes flying overhead and the bodies of two Englishmen lying on the road, you could believe it was peacetime. #dday7
There are two explosions; men in front of me fall. Swept back along by the crowd, I find myself at the road that I needed to take.
Road is jammed with soldiers. Already over an hour late, threading my way through the crowd. Just passed the street where I should've turned
Everything seems to be falling into place. The farmer's wife arrives with a bottle of calvados and I take the opportunity to slip off.
A doctor has emptied out his barn to carry out first aid here. Naturally, the farmer will be compensated, especially if the hay is spoiled.
Farm has been requisitioned by the English, who have taken all the hay out of the barn. If it rains or catches fire, it will be disastrous
In the village of Colleville, an MP and a very angry farmer are communicating. The Commandant is approaching to find out what's going on.
