Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah is a man-made island shaped like a palm tree with a trunk, fronds, and a surrounding crescent that acts as a breakwater. GPS and satellite imagery were used extensively to get the shape perfect. Interestingly, the island wasn’t built using concrete or metal for the base. Instead, it was formed entirely using dredged sand from the sea and rock from nearby quarries.
