The Atacama Desert in Chile is one of the driest places on Earth and is perfect for astronomy. Engineers built the ALMA Observatory at 5,000 meters altitude to avoid atmospheric moisture. Its location allows scientists to observe distant galaxies with incredible precision. The dry, thin and stable air makes it the perfect location for astronomy, especially for detecting radio waves from space that would otherwise be absorbed by water vapor in the atmosphere.
