New ESSL study: Lightning kills about 64 people per year across Europe, 78% of them being men. In Eastern Europe, most victims were at work, whilst in Western Europe people were typically engaged in leisure activities. Read more here: doi.org/10.1175/WCAS-D…

In 2024, we've recorded 642 severe weather related fatalities. Majority of them (409 or 64%) were produced by heavy rainfall. Severe wind gusts and lightning were second and third leading cause of fatalities.

In 2024, we've received more than 10 700 reports of heavy rain, the largest number since 2006. Heavy rain was also by far the deadliest type of severe weather, causing 409 fatalities. 232 of the fatalities were caused by the flash flood in the Valencia area on 29 October.

We've collected more than 10 000 reports of large hail in 2024, a new record. Large hail injured 41 people in total, much less than 328 injuries reported from 2023. Find out more about the major haistorms of 2024 in the blog: essl.org/cms/hailstorms…

There were almost 32 000 severe wind reports in 2024 across Europe, causing 87 fatalities and 443 injuries.

Time to reminisce about 2024! There were 1035 tornadoes in that year, out of which 655 were waterspouts. Tornadoes killed 1 and injured 19 people and the strongest torndo reached an IF3 rating.

The sad news has reached us that Chuck Doswell has passed away. ESSL will be forever grateful to him for the collaboration, intensive engagement with us and his engaging and unique delivery of the forecasting courses. He has made an enormous impact on storm research in Europe.

Our annual blog about major hailstorms of the last year is here! 2024 featured more than 100 days with hail reaching 5 cm in diameter, setting a new record, but the number of hail reports of that size was much less compared to 2023? Read more here: essl.org/cms/hailstorms…

We have exceeded 10 000 large hail reports mark for this year! We are currently standing at 10 084 reports and our ESWD staff is still submitting reports for still incomplete summer cases. So stay tuned for more, including our annual hail summary blog coming up in January.

Last week we organized the first edition of the course on storm microphysics and radar meteorology, which was taught by @PSU_RadarMeteo. Course combined Matt's lectures with case studies using our new radar displayer developed by @BramvantVeen. We had a blast to say the least :)

Today is the one year anniversary of the EU hail record of 19 cm! N Italy was the region most affected by hailstorms in that year, confirmed by the ARCHaMo applied to the ERA5 reanalysis. The modelled frequency of hail ≥ 5 cm for 2023 was 93.5% above the 1979-2023 average.

Together with @eumetsat, ESSL is looking at the data from the new MTG-LI instrument. Here, we show examples from yesterday's severe storms showing the flash area and the horizontal extent of flashes combined with their density. Note the long flash across the southern Netherlands.
