Do some research before deciding on new dev tools, but don't feel like you need to always seek out the latest stuff. If the tools you're learning at the moment make your life easier, they're right for you right now. You can move on to newer stuff later.

After you've written a chunk of working code, loosen the coupling, simplify your arrays and objects, and make the repetitive parts DRY. It will take little extra time to do, but you are training yourself to avoid mistakes in the future.

A good way to measure your progress as a developer is to look at how many upvotes the questions you are looking for have on Stack Overflow. Common questions tend to have one or less upvotes, while questions about language peculiarities and complex best practices have hundreds.

If it takes you a little longer right now to make your code more DRY, do it anyway. You will more than make up the time when revising the code. If you learn a new technique along the way, even better!!

Programming can be daunting and scary. Learning how to code makes us see how foolish we are and how much there is 'to be done' But if you look at it as a journey, an endless discovery, the mindset changes. Be curious and the stress will slowly fade. #100DaysOfCode #CodeNewbie

Sometimes it feels like your development process is trudging along. As long as you're learning something new, don't worry about overall output. In fact, it's usually better to go slow and study concepts more closely. Speed will come with time.

Temper your learning of the practical side of a programming language with theory. Did your code behave in an unexpected way? Instead of/in addition to finding an alternative solution, open up a blank editor and recreate the problem, then figure out why it occurred.

If you're having trouble with a chunk of code, don't stop at finding a solution, find out *why* the old way didn't work and *how* the new way does. Every time you possibly can. If you're really pressed for time, make a note to learn the why and how in your spare time.

The index in Git (what you push files to with Git's 'git add this/file.txt' feature before you commit) is never "empty," even right after a commit. After you push a commit but before you add new files, it contains the same files as the last commit. It's the same as HEAD.

When passing an object/array to a view, ask yourself if the structure is more complex than necessary. Could it make sense with fewer properties? Fewer levels in the hierarchy? As long as it can be unpacked in the view without extraneous logic, then the simpler the better.

If you're developing for the web, don't just learn a programming language and an MVC framework to run it in, learn about apache/nginx, learn the Linux command line, learn an SQL language, learn git. This is what will make you an unstoppable developer.

If you master just one CSS technique, make it FlexBox. Learn it backwards and forwards. It will make 99% of the layouts you come across much more simple and easy.
