In 1861, residents of Beaufort, SC, fled the city when Union troops arrived. The exodus came to be known as "The Great Skedaddle." Many never returned, and their homes were burned or sold for back taxes. This photo shows a view of the Beaufort waterfront. f3.social/6yai

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII. On September 2, 1945, Japan officially signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Less than 1% of the 16.4 million Americans who served during the war are still alive today.
