a16z founder Ben Horowitz explains how startup CEOs should think about delegation
“You only get leverage if the person that you hire can do it better than you can. As long as you feel like you’re better than them at it, you’re just going to keep second guessing them and you’re…
after half a year as a NYC founder I've figured out the ideal weekly schedule:
sun: strategize
mon: set up hinge dates for the week
tues: breathwork + meditation
wed: execute (9am - 10am)
thu: cold plunge at othership
fri: crypto meetup in SoHo
sat: go to art events in bushwick
Founders have an incredibly annoying attention-to-detail
* They see every typo
* Notice every time anyone is late
* Catch 10,000 bugs
* Remember every time anyone said they'd do something
It's not that they don't have anything better to do
It's just, start-ups die otherwise
“Founder mode is a terrible idea. It may cause some companies to be exceptional successes, but won’t cause success at every company.”
Ya that’s just startups. More exceptional outcomes is all that matters.
You always think you’re working hard until you see someone working 10x harder than you. Then you’re like “F#%K - I need to work harder.”
The crazy part is that this happens 5-10 times throughout your life.
Which also means - yes - there are people working 1000x harder than you.
Jeff Bezos: “Focus on the controllable inputs to your business instead of the outputs”
Jeff gives the example of companies trying to drive up their stock price by actually going out and trying to sell their stock:
“[A higher stock price] is the final output…. That’s not going…
Everyone wants to be part of a fast growing successful company until they start to realize the grueling work it takes.
Not for the faint of heart or weak stomach.
The hardest part of any startup is going from zero to one.
You generally have little to no resources, and almost certainly lack capital.
The system is designed to weed out weak founders. Only the strongest and most resilient people survive this first hurdle.
