I fear the countryside might soon be covered in plastic tubes. Wrong species. Wrong stock. Wrong places. No aftercare. Stopping cutting a proportion of farm hedges would be a better bet with properly thought through nat regen areas and deer culling. bbc.co.uk/news/election-…

Allium sphaerocephalon is great for pollinators and does not need any watering or other maintenance. It also self-seeds gently on my allotment but never gets in the way of other plants. #plants #bees

What Brigit says is important. I see too many bee hotels suspended on rope, or placed on the ground or in the shade. Even @friends_earth wrongly advise people to hang their home-made bee hotel on a rope. #SolitaryBeeWeek

These are not meadows, they are horticulture: flowerbeds of annuals that have to be re-sown each season. They are not without value to pollinators however, and they get people interested in alternatives to mown grass.

#SolitaryBeeWeek If you have garden Campanulas; check them in the morning for Harebell Carpenter Bees. Here's a male (together with some pollen beetles) I found at 08.30 "sleeping" in one. Note the characteristic little "prongs" at the end of his abdomen.

#SolitaryBeeWeek #SolitaryBeeHour One from a week or so back. Male Megachile Leafcutter Bees getting their first glimpse of the world (our #Staffs garden in this instance) plus a little Hylaeus Yellow-faced Bee checking our bee-hotel.

I echo this - a great flower for small solitary bees. Easy to grow but tends to be a short lived perennial. Usually seeds itself in a well-drained soil.

I'd like to commend this new book by my friend David Woodfall. 'Rewilding, Real Life Stories...' I must declare an interest as I made a contribution, but it is only one of many. A work of great breadth, with over 50 contributors and every shade of opinion. Fascinating reading.

Interesting thread, but I would define 'native' as 'native to Europe' as Britain is a political concept, not a biological one. Many European plants are perfect for our wildlife gardens. Plants from further afield often not so, esp. from tropics and S. hemisphere.
