‘Motherhood is a barren wasteland, an ashtray, a noose,’ I tell my youngest. As he blinks at me from his highchair, he seems to understand.
‘You are a bad mother,’ said my son. The gaslighting was off the charts.
“Midlife is a sexual earthquake,” I told him. He nodded. Despite the drab surroundings of the parent-teacher conference, I knew he understood.
I had been sentenced to motherhood and now I was out on appeal.
My vagina is a lotus flower, a loaf of bread, a powerful nuclear reactor, a melon.
‘Even a butterfly must hatch from its cocoon,’ I told my children, pushing them into their father’s car. ‘You will thank me for this one day.’
