My thoughts on exit interviews: "I told you all this stuff over and over before I quit and you did shit about it."
I've been working in tech a very long time. I know the rules: don't trust HR, this happens *everywhere*, etc.
@fuzzyKB And then you promoted that asshole later anyway.....
@fuzzyKB @marshall007 @rob_ferguson is this us?
@fuzzyKB Someone gave me advice a while back that exit interviews are just the way HR uses to find out if you plan on suing the company. It clicked for me after that. Now I just say nice things and get it over with.
@fuzzyKB RARELY does an exit interview ever result in anything meaningful, but it can help build a case against removing toxic managers. Rarely.
@fuzzyKB Even my HR Manager friend told me to to decline exit interviews.
@fuzzyKB Good companies and HR departments conduct stay interviews. It’s a question you should ask when getting your next role. It means they do try to find out before it’s too late.
@fuzzyKB The exit interview reminds me of the movie Ground Hog Day - I’m going to tell you what you need to do better as I have done before. This will sound the same as other past employees. Luckily for me this is the last time I’ll have to repeat myself with you.
@fuzzyKB Agreed. At this point I simply refuse to do them.
@fuzzyKB I had an exit interview, laid it all on the line got asked to stay so they could put things right. Nothing changed, I quit again but they didn’t bother with a second exit interview 😂😂
@fuzzyKB You've summarized the entire plot of my book: amazon.com/Destroy-Tech-S…
@fuzzyKB Anecdotally it feels like the people with the most grievances are the least likely to be asked/allowed to give an exit interview. Those are the ones that would be most useful to the company, especially if they gave another one several months later when we're safely in a new job.
@fuzzyKB My exit interview next week will be short. Highlights will include Director shouldn't be director of infrastructure since she has no background in it. Infrastructure teams aren't suited to be completely "agile/scrum" since what we do isn't as cookie cutter as dev ops,..
@fuzzyKB I had actually prepared for an exit interview, because I left behind a bunch of colleagues I cared for and I knew a lot of them were job hunting. I also indicated this to HR, who kept on postponing until I had left the company.
@fuzzyKB I think it’s also true, albeit unfortunate, that the weight of your words matter most when they’re, “Now I’m leaving and this is why.”
@fuzzyKB I just had one under the guise of them walking me through offboarding. The last two minutes was what I expected- the first 28 were them trying to grill me. I think I broke the poor HR woman when I told her my boss didn’t even say my name correctly.
@fuzzyKB More so you don't want to burn bridges so 80% of what should be said goes unsaid.
@fuzzyKB It's not in your personal best interest to do an exit interview or to sign additional paperwork. There is no requirement that you do either.
@fuzzyKB Do companies still do exit interviews? I haven’t had one in ages.
@fuzzyKB I was fired after being repeatedly harassed/marginalized by a manager I warned them about. I was gaslit and told I was nuts. HR director didn’t believe me, nobody did.
@fuzzyKB Story of my exit interviews.
@fuzzyKB I get the sentiment. I left several companies because I felt the same way But looking back, I should have done things differently
@fuzzyKB Because we like data & reviews of data to propose action items. Usually the data and AIs are ignored - as in almost every other domain. Action requires countering inertia which is large.
@fuzzyKB FWIW, I refused an exit interview, stayed away for almost a year and just got rehired. We'll see....
@fuzzyKB And what are you thoughts about exit retrospectives ?
