Unity introducing new fee attached to game installs gamedeveloper.com/business/unity…
@gamedevdotcom I'm making my game with Godot, it is a good engine, it is completely free and you don't have to pay a penny for it.

@gamedevdotcom HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA Unity is trying to kill itself
@gamedevdotcom Hello, Unity developers. The C# support in Godot 4.0+ is very agreeable and no one is gonna tell you how you're allowed to use it.
@gamedevdotcom OK byyyyyyye 😅
@gamedevdotcom Me repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling a game I don't like:
@gamedevdotcom Imagine trolls mass installing your game
@gamedevdotcom As I began working on my game, I was glad I already chose Unreal over Unity.
@gamedevdotcom Hey @unity team, please take a good hard look at everyone's reactions and take a step back right now. This isn't working.
@gamedevdotcom 20 CENTS!? Dude, this is going to kill everything except mobile ad sinks.
@gamedevdotcom This is going to drive people away from @unitygames
To clarify some misunderstandings -- These fees will only go in to effect for developers who have reached both the revenue threshold and install threshold. Meaning this change won't affect 90% of Unity users. Please check out our forum for the most up to date clarifications on this policy: on.unity.com/3ZfyHFg
@gamedevdotcom This would destroy most of their editor user count. How would they enforce it? What about pirated copies, are they counted as installs? Are companies grandfathered out because of previous contracts?
@gamedevdotcom It's the smart move, better than the paid AI they were toying with.
@gamedevdotcom Just give FNA/MonoGame a try. Pure C#, code first approach, open-source, support to consoles and mobile.
@gamedevdotcom Always count on Unity to find the most unexpected and innovative ways to shoot themselves in the foot. The worst part is that these are MONTHLY fees. lol. lmao. rofl, even.
@gamedevdotcom I love how Unity keeps promoting free open source alternatives for game development 🥰
@gamedevdotcom well, not like I'd reach these thresholds anyways, but glad i picked @godotengine over @unity ☺️
Sales of new Unity Plus subscriptions stops today, Plus members will be asked to switch to Basic or Pro next month. Current Plus accounts can use Pro for a year at current prices, but go up afterward. And if you're doing console development, you'll absolutely have to use Pro. This along with the tax per Unity game install by your playerbase is shocking.
@gamedevdotcom this lil guy wouldn't play you like that
@gamedevdotcom So if I hate a particular game developer, can I just uninstall and reinstall the program a few thousand times to punish them?
@gamedevdotcom but how will unity know how many people have installed a certain game programmed by a certain person/company?
@gamedevdotcom Everything is and always will be free: defold.com :)
@gamedevdotcom There is a lot of reactionary kneejerking in the comments, but this is limited to a revenue threshold - "The Runtime Fee kicks in after devs cross specific revenue and install thresholds .... after a project crosses both $200l in revenue over 12mo and 200k total installs."
@gamedevdotcom So if I release a game and 200k people install it, I will have to pay 20 cents each time someone installs it past that point???? The fuck???
@gamedevdotcom So they're just actively trying to call it quits and hand things over to Unreal, then.
@gamedevdotcom In other words, install @godotengine & forget Unity ever existed? Great.
@gamedevdotcom This is a certified “Rug pull before bankruptcy” moment
@gamedevdotcom Sounds like unity is about to lose a lot of developers
@gamedevdotcom Maybe they should have asked these scenarios prior to publication
