Art tests in game dev often harm diversity and fail to reflect real skills. "It’s time for the game dev industry to evolve and adopt hiring practices that truly reflect the collaborative nature of our work." gamedeveloper.com/art/why-art-te…
@gamedevdotcom Art tests are usually given when a person’s portfolio is very nice, but you want to make sure they can match your project’s style. For example, your game has hand painted textures, and all of their stuff is PBR but you want to give them a chance. The alternative is rejection.
"While art tests pose several issues, one of the most significant is their negative impact on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The substantial time commitment these tests require disproportionately affects individuals from underrepresented groups, including those with family responsibilities or limited free time." How the hell are people with 'family responsibilities' and 'limited free time' underrepresented groups?? And why are these supposed underrepresented groups disproportionately affected by art tests? Also, if you don't even have enough free time for a test drawing, how are you going to schedule in a full time game development job anyway? This could be the most insane virtue-signaling article I've ever read.
@gamedevdotcom I'm sure this is well meaning but in reality getting rid of art tests will fuck over junior artists.
@gamedevdotcom Also art tests have a strong tendency to be utilized as labor theft… Art tests should be paid.
@gamedevdotcom I took an art test for a game dev, was looking at a fat salary, gave it my very best shot, only to then be told the dev's client walked out🤮 Never work without guaranteed reward, y'all.
@gamedevdotcom lol "make it easier to pretend to be an artist" in the age of genbot slop is a wild take
@gamedevdotcom I actually agree these tests are the biggest scams ever and should be paid
@gamedevdotcom Art tests to me have always been a way to prove I’m better than my resume or reel.
@gamedevdotcom Who tf is doing art tests?! 🏂😂
@gamedevdotcom Artists provide the service and product. An art test just sounds like a means to get free art from the artist. Portfolios and work experience matter, not free commission work masqueraded as "tests".
@gamedevdotcom Gamedev is a high stress environment. If you can't handle the stress of a test you probably won't handle the stress of the work either. That being said, no test should take more than two days.
@gamedevdotcom I think they should be paid, it is work they're doing, but otherwise this article is real weird.
@gamedevdotcom A test assignment is the most unbiased way to determine the professional qualities of an applicant. What does nonsense about diversity concerns and some groups freetime have to do with this, if your job is to hire professionals?
