1/2 How do you analyze scat?We recorded the proportion of each prey item in each scat using a grid to estimate the percent volume of each item. We assessed volumes of deer fawns, grouse, &snowshoe hare for wolves/coyotes+calc dietary breadth & food niche overlap for each species.

Maps on Monday!: While the Grand Portage Reservation and Isle Royale National Park are similar in latitude and habitat types, they differ in species composition and management objectives. We established simultaneous camera grids to investigate mammal community differences!

Yesterday's featured bird was a pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus)! #Pileatedwoodpeckers are the largest common woodpecker found in North America (second only to the likely extinct Ivory-billed woodpecker). They are nearly the size of a crow, with a wingspan of 66-75 cm!

What are #coyotes & #wolves are eating? On #mipredprey we opportunistically collected scats to find out! We washed scats in nylons & dried contents so all that remained was feathers, hair, bone fragments, seeds, &vegetation. We IDed prey items & recorded the proportion of each.

Remote #PhotoFriday Who knows what species got up close & personal with our trail camera? This camera was part of the #mipredprey deer camera survey. By placing cameras on old logging/ATV trails that deer frequently use, we can estimate deer abundance and population composition.

2/2 With all stitches out, the elastic fabric stretches to fit comfortably on an adult deer. When the elastic eventually wears out, the collar simply falls off, leaving us to collect it via telemetry. #wildlife #research #fawn #deer

1/2 How do you collar an animal that is going to continue to grow? The #fawn collars we used on #mipredprey are designed to grow with the fawns. Stitches sewn into the elastic fabric break out one at a time, allowing the collar to incrementally increase in size.

Maps on Monday: On the #Afognak Elk Project, an important part of our research revolves around estimating #elk recruitment through an annual #aerial helicopter survey. Using GPS collars we locate and photograph elk herds. Back in the office, we count number of #cows and #calves.

Remote Photo Friday!: Who knows what mystery mammal was caught on trail camera during our deer camera survey? The passive trail camera survey makes use of low-use trails created by logging and off-road vehicles to estimate deer abundance.

This time of year from 2009-2019 we were getting into the full swing summer field season on #mipredprey. A main focus was collaring fawns and monitoring survival. Over the course of the project we collared 362 fawns! Are you seeing #fawns in your area?

Maps on Monday!: Throwback to 2015 GPS locations of WO111, adult F #wolf, was collared on #mipredprey to investigate GPS cluster sites for prey remains. However, this wolf didn't stick around the study area for long! Notice the corresponding dates and colors on the map!

Yesterday's cryptic critter was a #moose (Alces alces)! The long legs looked like trees blending into the background. Moose are the largest members of the #deer family (Cervidae), standing stand 1.5-2m tall!? DYK they are also speedy runners, able to run close to 55mph?!
