#OnThisDay, September 4th 1848, Fanny Parnell was born in Avondale, Co. Wicklow. She was an Irish Poet, Nationalist and sister of Charles Stewart Parnell. Her best-known poem is "Hold the Harvest", which Michael Davitt referred to as the “Marseillaise of the Irish peasant."

#OnThisDay, 1st September 1864, Sir Roger David Casement was born. Casement carried out vital humanitarian work in the Congo and Peru, took part in the Howth Gun-Running, and organised the attempted procurement of arms from Germany in 1916, following which he was executed.

Tomorrow, 31st August 1913, marks the first Bloody Sunday. The Dublin Metropolitan Police would attack a crowd gathering to listen to James Larkin, causing two deaths and hundreds of injuries. This occurred in the midst of the Dublin Lockout.

#onthisday Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney, was arrested for the possession of seditious materials. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment on the 16th of August. MacSwiney was taken to Brixton prison in England, where he joined the hunger strikers in Cork.
