Happy St George's Day fellow flagshaggers 🏴🏴🏴🏴 Some facts about our patron saint! (Blessed be) Bit awkward, this first one. St. George never actually set foot in England. He was Turkish - born in Cappadocia he died in what was then Palestine (now Israel) in 303 AD. St George wasn't a knight, he was an officer in the Roman army. Henry VIII was the first monarch to use the St George's cross to represent England. It's rumoured he was having marital difficulty at the time. Like all good fairy tales, the dragon was added to his life story 500 years after St George's death as a symbolic representation of his bravery. St George was canonised by Pope Gelasius in AD 494, but the first 'St George's day' didn't take place for 1000 years after that. George is also the patron saint of Venice, Genoa, Portugal, Ethiopia and Catalonia In 1940 King George VI created the The George Cross. A new award for acts of heroism. That's a proud 84 years ago. St George died in the 4th century. Emperor Diocletian beheaded him. As English as curry and a donner! Hurrah! 💜
