@Criticastery #AirIndia JV with Aeroflot using Il-62 for BOM, Il-86 for DEL and Tu-154 for TAS-DEL service (TAS-DEL service was with other Indian carrier #IndianAirlines) were purely to address O&D traffic. The 2x Europe connectors on Air India metal must NOT be linked with these.
@Criticastery Have already discussed why JV route was preferred by most airlines to serve O&D traffic to former USSR. Not just #AirIndia, but Japan Airlines, El Al, Finnair etc also used same JV method using Aeroflot aircraft to operate to USSR - Simpler paperwork! (Pic- Tu114 in JAL colors)

@Criticastery #AirIndia discontinued 2x weekly India-Moscow-Europe connectors in the 90s for 2 reasons. Mainly, loss of 5th freedom following Soviet Union disintegration. And secondly, shortage of aircraft for expansion of US services beyond JFK to ORD etc.
