Fascinating and thought-provoking #AnnualDigiLecture @UkNatArchives by @laurenfklein. I loved Mimi Ọnụọha's The Library of Missing Datasets as I grapple with the huge gaps and silences in my project sources mimionuoha.com/the-library-of…

Although keep/don't keep is binary for individual items, in aggregate 'keep some' is more nuanced, even before considering the many gradations of access in practice. Good practices like retention schedules & documenting appraisal decisions are relevant. #AnnualDigiLecture

#AnnualDigiLecture also talks about example of searching in archives for Benjamin Franklin versus Benjamin Franklin's wife - bring home to students what the gaps look like
#AnnualDigiLecture also the work of indigenous communities to build their own archives. Not appropriate for state archives to take these over (further embedding colonialism), but they can support and link to them and help fill the holes in record (hope I've summarised this OK)
#AnnualDigiLecture question about community archives in this context. Talks about Homecoming Project (I think) look at the impact of COVID on the black community in the US. Started with just names, but augmented with links to newspapers and obituary sites to tell more of story
#AnnualDigiLecture keeping everything isn't possible, but there are all sorts of levels, digitise it, bury it deep in catalogue, behind password etc. Also about how we approach the sources that do exist and not further privilege those who are documented v those who were not
#AnnualDigiLecture (missed one I think) Is archival appraisal and selection keep/don't keep a false binary itself?
Great talk by @laurenfklein - « #DataFeminism requires an expanded definition of data science. » #annualdigilecture
Listening in on this *really* interesting lecture. Missing data, re-conceptualising data science, thinking about power and its structures...so much to think about! #annualdigilecture
