I spent many happy days in the #Scrub studying Sabal etonia, an endemic palm from the #Florida Scrub. It has large, black drupes, which is a bit of a trend among scrub endemics. They often have larger fruits than congeners from other habitats. #Arecaceae

Is Palms of New Guinea the last word on the island’s palms? Not at all! It’s the most recent word, but it won’t be the last. This map from PoNG shows there are still many areas with few or no palm collections. What other palms await discovery? #Arecaceae #PoNG #palmsofnewguinea
Calamus is the largest genus in the palm family, & it is richly represented in New Guinea, where there are 62 species. 34 species were described as new by @BillJBaker, John Dransfield & colleagues during the PoNG project. #PoNG #Arecaceae 📷: C. pachypus.
So many New Guinea palms have ridged endocarps (like this Ptychococcus paradoxus), even species in genera that don’t normally have ridged endocarps (like Licuala). We have idly wondered if it is related to dispersal by cassowaries. ⚠️Untested hypothesis ⚠️ #PoNG #Arecaceae
New Guinea is home to 22 species of Ptychosperma, most of which are endemic (& only a few other spp. occur outside of NG). They are mostly small to medium palms with tremendous horticultural & ornamental potential. 📷: P. pullenii. #PoNG #Arecaceae
Sommieria is endemic to western New Guinea. Sommieria leucophylla is its only species. It’s an understory litter-trapper (makes a private compost pile in its crown). Its closest relative is Pelagodoxa, a large palm from the islands of the western Pacific. #PoNG #Arecaceae
Dransfieldia is a monotypic genus from New Guinea honoring John. The species was 1st collected by Beccari in 1872. Placed in Ptychosperma, Rhopaloblaste & Heterospathe, the species finally got its own genus in 2006. J. Dransfield (right) & Dransfieldia. #PoNG #Arecaceae
Waiting for a flight in Papua, Indonesia in 1995, I asked John Dransfield, now that he finished Palms of Madagascar (1995), what’s next? What area of the world had the most unknown #palm flora? He concluded that NG was terra incognita. 📷 JD & Korthalsia zippelii #PoNG #Arecaceae
Today is the official launch day of Palms of New Guinea! This week, I’ll be posting bits about the #palms. PoNG was conceived in 1995. Over the years, the PoNG team published 3 new genera, 79 new species & 45 new combinations. They’re all in the new book! #PoNG #Arecaceae

Coconut (Cocos nucifera; #Arecaceae) is a champion disperser. Its fruits can float for months & still sprout when stranded. Nevertheless, it achieved its pantropical distribution with help from humans, for whom this is a supremely useful crop. #hydrochory #dispersal
I have a bowl of seeds/fruits picked up from beaches in Florida & Asia. My carpological collection includes Manicaria saccifera (#Arecaceae), Heritiera littoralis (#Malvaceae), Barringtonia acutangula (#Lecythidaceae) & Sacoglottis amazonica (#Humiriaceae). #hydrochory #dispersal
In Zona 2017 (see Alt Text), I described how Chamaedorea cataractarum (#Arecaceae) deploys endocarp fibers after soaking in water. The fiber hooks promote dispersal (by increasing drag) & retard dispersal (by fixing the endocarp to the substrate). #hydrochory #dispersal
The #palm Phytelephas aequatorialis is dioecious, but both sexes are thermogenic, heating 10–20°C above ambient, as the thermal images show. The inflorescences heat up while still covered by the bracts. Pollinators are small #Coleoptera. #thermogenesis #Arecaceae
