#EntSocVic was at Long Hollow Heathland this week. Thanks to Belinda J Raymond and Friends Of Native Wildlife Inc for organising an amazing event where people from Bayside could learn about the amazing world of insects, like this moth, the Black Spot Moth (Epicoma melanospila).

Virginia Reserve Series: Apple Looper (Phrissogonus laticostata), is found in every Australian state & territory. Adults wingspan = 15mm, males have projecting bunches of hair-like scales on the costa of each forewing. #entsocvic #moths

Virginia Reserve Series: This beautiful Spur-Throated Locust (Austracris guttulosa) arrived on the moth sheet just as we switched of the lamp. Why do the most interesting (and largest) insects come when you're packing up :-) #entsocvic
Another 38 deg C day and a hot still night. So #EntSocVic are out again tonight in the SE suburbs of Melbourne in a little suburban park, Virginia Park, in Bentleigh. Lots of interesting insects again.

Braeside Park Series: Our final post for the Braeside series! Check out this bull ant (Myrmecia simillima) found by #EntSocVic member @gelkiu on iNaturalist. Myrmecia simillima is one of the larger species of Myrmecia and is a member of the gulosa species group.
Braeside Park Series: Continuing on with this series we move to Hemiptera. This amazing patterned nymph of Amorbus atomarius was observed by #EntSocVic member Matt Tudor. Lots of these nymphs around last week.
Braeside Park Series: Last weekend #EntSocVic was at Braeside Park for our first event of 2024. An amazing day! Thirty members came along to explore the park by day and setup moth sheets at night. We'll be starting a series of posts showing some of the insects we observed.

Jewel beetles, family Buprestidae, are amazing insects. Over 1000 species can be found in Australia, and can be found across the country. Adults feed on the nectar of flowering plants during the day and at certain times of the year you can see large numbers of them. #EntSocVic
This amazing bug, genus Amorbus, was observed by #EntSocVic member Nicole Andrews. Belonging to the Family Coreidae (Leaf-footed Bugs), they're "sap suckers" and have piercing-sucking mouthparts that allow them to pierce the soft part of the plants and suck the juices inside.
