Meet #Cleome decipiens, formerly Podandrogyne d., of Central Amer. & northern South Amer. It is unusual in being monoecious. Staminate flowers (1st photo) and long, dangling fruits (on gynophores! 2nd photo) shown here. #Cleomaceae
This little charmer is Cleome aldenella, a.k.a. Polanisia tenuifolia (generic limits are very much in flux in #Cleomaceae). It’s native to dry, sandy habitats in the SE USA. The gynophore is much shorter than the fruits.
Cleomella arborea, which I first learned in a previous century as Isomeris arborea, is native to the deserts & shrublands of western North America. It’s pollinated by large #bees, but sometimes #hummingbirds can do the job. Just look at those #gynophores! #Cleomaceae
Like #Capparaceae, close-cousins the #Cleomaceae have gynophores, but differ in having palmately compound leaves, zygomorphic flowers, & coiled anthers. This is Cleome houtteana. Some slender, green fruits, on long gynophores, are visible in the photo.
Theresa Saunders is next up in Cooley sessions with a large #Angiosperm353 based family scale phylogeny of #Cleomaceae combined w/ broad distribution deep dive from @GBIF data #Botany2022
Great talk by Theresa Saunders on resolving relationships in #Cleomaceae, the sister family to #Brassicaceae using #Angiosperms353 #Botany2022
Liz Davies of Gwent on #GardenersWorld has made a wonderful job of her steep plot. The 'Hot' garden was particularly lovely... and thanks for bringing my attention to #Cleomaceae. @GWandShows
for the first #WildflowerWednesday of the new, shiny year we're going to enjoy some floral fireworks the #Cleomaceae isn't the most familiar of families, with 235 species globally, mostly in the genus Cleome C anomala, Ecuador C violacea, Portugal C chilensis, Chile
