“Linguistic kindness” were words I needed to read yesterday.
@Anarfea @hoist_colours Interesting perspective here! I don’t think people always appreciate just how deeply Eleanor hurt, betrayed and insulted Max. I would understand her choice better if the writers made more of an effort to show that she was accepting to work off her debt, and not be r*ped & beaten
But I'm not convinced that Max's "choice" is incredible given what we know about her. Anyway, that's just my two cents on the subject. 11/11
But Anne, with help from Eleanor, does rescue Max. So we're back to the whole issue of the writers using the rape plot o propel the Maxanne storyline. And yes, you can say that it was unnecessary and they could have done something else. 10/?
I also think Max underestimated Hamund's brutality and overestimated her own ability to deal with it all. She pretty quickly realizes she's in over her head. And I do think if Anne hadn't intervened, Hamund probably would have escalated to killing Max. 9/?
I think this is a choice that's fueled by emotion more than logic, but I do think it is a choice she makes. **This does not in any way absolve Hamund or any of the other rapists of their wrongdoing. 8/?
Eleanor can't even rescue Max without making a power play in the same move. That has got to fucking sting. So what does Max do? She refuses Eleanor's aid. And she reminds her that she, unlike Eleanor, takes responsibility for her actions and pays her debts. 7/?
And the thing that I think has freshly rubbed salt in the wound, is Eleanor leveraging Max's suffering to help Flint. In the same breath with which she beats Hamund off Max, she tells Vane's crew they have 2 choices: they can depose Vane or starve. 6/?
Specifically, the choice to go back to Vane's crew to "work off" her debt seems more palatable than accepting assistance from Eleanor, who betrayed her and broke her heart. I think that speaks huge volumes about how deeply Eleanor hurt Max. 5/?
Max is a sex worker. Before that she was a slave. I think it's safe to assume that she has been raped before, so much to the point where she might be desensitized to it. So a choice that seems incomprehensible to women to whom rape is not commonplace may be palatable to her. 4/?
So Hoist's members say that "no woman would chose rape". And I was starting from the assumption that Max did chose her fate, and trying to figure out why. I think it comes down to the fact that Max has a very different background than most women in the audience (hopefully). 3/?
And that may be right. Maybe the writers just didn't put much thought into it. But I wrote a fic from Max's POV which addresses this storyline and I had to make it make sense to me as a writer, and this is the explanation I came up with and I wanted to share. 2/?
CW Rape: So I was just listening to @hoist_colours's first Max episode, and I wanted to talk about the whole "Max Chose" her S1 fate. Mostly they dismiss the idea of Max "choosing" to go back to Vane's crew as bad writing by male writers who don't understand women. 1/?
