A6. If youve made 1:1s a trusting, casual, and safe space, you’ll hear more truths from a person. For career, most people know what they want, but are scared to say it. Growing engineers will actually help u grow faster, so it’s a win-win. Bring it up if they don't! #ManagerChats

A5. A huge mistake with 1:1s is not showing up or constantly cancelling. People value them more if they can expect they'll happen regularly. Also, its obvious when we’re on video chat & trying to multitask. Don't do that, just give undivided attention to the person. #ManagerChats

A4. Keeping 1:1s casual is what makes people value them more. Since we’re remote, use some time to talk about how things are going personally, get to know them. TBH sometimes they act as a therapy session, as funny as that sounds, but it makes people value the time. #ManagerChats

A3. Weekly 1:1s are really ideal if possible. Since we’re all remote now its even more important & keep them casual. Ur direct report should run with the agenda, give them time to talk whats on their mind. If you have updates urself, save them to the end if you can. #ManagerChats

A2. Ive seen that regular 1-on-1s help build trust and thats what makes a strong team. Trust that your boss is looking out for your career, and trust that your engineers are looking out for the deliverables. Without effective 1:1s its harder to establish that. #ManagerChats
