Happy World Rewilding Day! I’m so thrilled that the wonderful @ANGELACHARDING has illustrated my children’s version of Wilding. Hope it will bring the wonders of Rewilding to a new generation - with ideas about how we can all make space for nature.

Elect Conservatives again = continue the decade-long policy disaster that is the badger cull. I’ve read the consultation doc and I’m shocked by its dishonesty. Can’t quite believe govt scientists are putting their names to this. They should be ashamed. theguardian.com/environment/20…
whitestorkproject.org/live-cam-feed/ So excited to share our stork nest cam live from @KneppWilding Last night the female laid her first egg. Amazing how tender her mate was, bringing soft bedding. Hope you enjoy this unfolding story. It's a soothing watch - balm for the soul!
Do join us! It will be a wonderful evening!

Now a new book by @isabella_tree is about the @KneppWilding estate. “It really is such a story of hope that I think people find it quite galvanising.. People say it doesn’t answer the problem of #ClimateChange. We can say now, categorically, it does.” theguardian.com/environment/20…
March 6 - do join me and the legendary Angela Harding who has brought Wilding to life with her stunning illustrations. We’ll be talking rewilding, woodcuts and the joy of working on this book together, March 6. And celebrating with some wonderful food and wine @KneppKitchen

My thoughts on the urgent need for better pesticide regulation in the UK. RT if you agree. theconversation.com/pesticides-urg…
Really important research from @DaveGoulson. There are really effective herbal solutions for dog fleas, as there are for lice in human hair. Why poison our pets, us, our natural water systems and the environment? All these chemicals need to be challenged.

An absolute masterpiece!
Study at @KneppWilding indicates more #carbon is stored belowground in scrubland than current models predict – methods to calculate storage in these habitats need further refinement! Find out more: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10… @NancycBurrell @ElizSJeffers @OxLEL
So proud of our daughter @NancycBurrell ‘s first published paper. Her first salvo in an important piece of work that shows the value of #rewilding for carbon storage as well as biodiversity

“.. the temperate forest biome was historically heterogeneous (>50% open) rather than uniformly dense, which is consistent with the dependency of much of contemporary European biodiversity on open vegetation and light woodland.” Pine, oak, flowering shrubs - all need light!

Grrrrrr…..when will the demonisation of ragwort ever end and common sense prevail? It’s a myth that refuses to lie down, even amongst so-called nature-lovers.

River buffers 💧🌳 If every river had this along its length, the improvement to our biodiversity, climate resilience, water quality and water security would be absolutely huge. Probably the biggest reversal of nature depletion we could achieve. and it’s just so simple.

Wilding: How to Bring Wildlife Back - An Illustrated Guide is a reimagining of @isabella_tree's Wilding: The Return of Nature to a British Farm and features stunning lino prints and watercolour illustrations by @ANGELACHARDING. It's available to pre-order now.
It's a bold choice to stand in front of a sign saying "long-term decisions for a brighter future", to claim "irony isn't lost on me" and then go on to announce a massive road building programme in the midst of a climate emergency. #CPC2023
Disrupts our climate. Makes people sick. Pollutes air and rivers. Hazardous to manufacture and transport. Damages soils. Harms wild species. Puts small farms out of business. Devastates rural communities. So why do farmers go on using nitrogen fertiliser?
This is cynical beyond belief. The PM is pretending to halt frightening proposals that simply do not exist. He is doing it to turn the environment into a US-style political wedge issue - something the UK has avoided all my political life. Sunak is chucking the environment into…
They tax us to subsidise a farming system that makes crops sick. Pesticides used to control disease end up in food and make us sick too. So they tax us again to pay NHS to treat us. ‘We follow science,’ says Farm Minister Mark Spencer. But whose science, I wonder?

Nice to see sausages from local *wild* wild boar making their way onto menus in the increasingly wild landscapes of the West Country. Attempting to eradicate native wildlife is grotesque; whereas sustainably and humanely hunting wild boar and deer for meat is ideal.
Just come across Liz Truss saying “I hadn’t gone into politics to deal with floods or fix prisons.” Why not? Wouldn’t politics be much better if she felt her job was to fix such things? This is a fundamental problem with our system @RestIsPolitics unherd.com/2024/04/why-li…

Wilding - in cinemas June 14th - the story of a young couple who gambled everything on the power of #nature, turning failing farmland into one of Europe’s most significant #rewilding experiments.
So busy with Guardian stories, I forgot today is The Swimmer paperback publication day. Hooray! Honestly, it’s the most creative and original thing I’ve ever done. Rog would probably say, “That’s cos it’s mostly my words chum” and I’d reply, “Roger, everyone needs a Horatio”.

Icons of England's river-crisis, No. 451: Swans on the Thames bearing raw sewage tide-marks on their feathers.
This is horrifying. @thameswater we know you don’t give a s**t but you should be ashamed. A pair of very thin swans with a raw sewage tide mark. Zoom in & see what devastation you, YES YOU are causing not only to the wildlife on top of the water - the fish have NO escape.
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it until government licensing advisors sit up and take note: “It is inconceivable that the release of millions of a large, highly mobile non-native species is not having a significant impact on our native biodiversity”. Time for licensing.
REVEALED: Just 131 shoots and game farms are responsible for rearing and releasing 6.2million pheasants in England - according to new official figures I obtained using FOI law Pheasant shooting is an industry out of control: time for nationwide licensing whoownsengland.org/2024/03/05/jus…
Profitability is only weakly related to increasing yield In fact lots of yield beyond a certain point is bought too expensively and so significant numbers of cows and acres aren’t profitable We are very discerning which stock/acres we take out of production
@herdyshepherd1 genuine question , how will you farm profitably if the sfi/cs stops , margins are tight already ,if you plant loads of trees land area is diminished and expensive to get back into production ,
@herdyshepherd1 Me and dad had a great conversation about "win-wins" yesterday and getting over the "it's environment or productivity" - more often than not, it's great for *both*
And we want to create more jobs for local people - and there’s way more work and £ in restoring land than there is in degrading it
Eg - alders and willow grow in boggy almost worthless bits of field that are currently dominated with common rush That land is almost certainly loss making - and can easily be transitioned to have tree cages with willow and alder - often it will even result in MORE grazing value
The whole debate has become polarised and childish on both sides There’s room enough for nature and farming if we do it in inspired ways and support good British farmers to make changes
We are about to plant another 30,000 trees - all in edges, hedges and cattle grazed landscapes The number of trees you can get in to a traditionally farmed landscape is unreal It’s not that hard if you want to, and use the non profitable bits of land and design it intelligently
Most of the data on soil and grazing management shows that most of grazing land is sub optimally managed for production The AHDB figures suggest it is 20-40% less productive than it could be if rotationally grazed And most land is below the organic matter it should have…
We have redesigned the farm to have the field pattern to maximise this and get that 20-40% uplift in grazing production But we don’t need to worst bits of each field they may as well be for nature
It is possible to have a more productive farm by grazing optimally with healthy soil AND have the space for way more nature That’s mind blowing but 100% true We never miss the worst bits of land because they were probably making a loss
