I often see advice saying to write small functions and have many layers of abstraction, but this could make it take a long time to understand what is really going on under the hood for debugging purposes. Is there a way to navigate/think about a codebase to avoid this?

I'm curious how well Github Copilot (and similar technologies) handle knowing when to deallocate memory in languages without garbage collection. Has this been studied?

I've noticed that learning web development in a new language is a lot different than just writing an algorithm in a new language. For the latter, you can mostly get away with looking stuff up as you go along, but for the former, you need to know the language before starting.

I feel like there's a sort of "uncanny valley" with abstraction in programming, where if something is super abstract it's easy, if it's super low-level you can at least understand what's going on, but if it's in between you're just lost.

The first version of the introduction to Django I was working on for Blueprint Boulder is done! Took a good day and a half of focused writing, and ended up being 13 pages. Still only covers very basic stuff, though, and I hope to expand it in the near future.

Trying to write up a guide for a club I'm in on how to modify .csv files with Django; in this case, it actually seems easier done than said. It's hard to convey the process of "feeling around until something works" in a formal guide.

Is there a reason why @jetbrains products are organized the way they are? It seems strange to have certain features of IntelliJ available as entirely separate IDEs. Another strange thing is that PhpStorm is just WebStorm + PHP; why have WebStorm, then?

Finally managed to set up PHP in IntelliJ IDEA, much harder than one would expect. Took me several hours of trying to read from the official docs until I found a YouTube tutorial that explained it perfectly in 15 minutes.

Does anyone know how the desc() function in R works? I looked at the documentation and couldn't figure it out. I know it's used to reverse the sorting order of arrange(), as in "arrange(data, desc(column))", but how does it work?
