Saw this at Goodwill today, and it got me thinking about how some tragedies that result in mass human casualties seem permanently untouchable and almost sacred, and others eventually become pop-culture punchlines and fodder for kitsch

This began very early, by the way, with quickie souvenir books, sheet music, etc. Those in the #antiques trade are familiar with the views of the disaster reverse-painted on glass, which once decorated Edwardian parlors and now regularly turn up in shops and auction houses.
