People are noticing how invasive Zoom is. The takeaway isn’t that Zoom is spyware, it’s that spyware tactics are a common feature of enterprise software. Surveillance techniques pioneered in call centers and fast food kitchens are spreading to all workers.
Here’s an article from 1981 by office workers about the new are encountering. This is a long term trend. processedworld.com/Issues/issue01…
@jasonpjason @bugQ the correct take: all enterprise software is malware
@jasonpjason When I worked in call centers management could listen in on any call at random. Length of every call was logged, and people could get fired for spending more time on calls than an average worker.
@jasonpjason @babynidoqueen What if... none of us are free... until all of us are free? Haha, jk... unless?
@jasonpjason @tech31842 That’s why even the VCs call it “surveillance capitalism”.
@jasonpjason On that note, I've tried to discuss this issue with people who should definitely care about opsec. Their eyes glaze over and they go continue to use gmail, Discord, etc.
@jasonpjason Every human on 🌎👉read (audible/audiobook) Surveillance Capitalism. It’s the modern day #1984. People don’t understand what they’re doing w the data. It’s not just about targeting individuals. It’s about control of humanity through weaponized psychology.
@jasonpjason Having an endless history of everything that happened in a chat software server-side is definitely something bosses want, but it's also enabled by side effects of features users want.
@jasonpjason Not quite yet but have been invited a few times recently and may need to interact. Any tips? have heard the web browser client is a little less invasive.....should I have this in a vm?
@jasonpjason I have to use zoom soon for school. How do I protect myself?
@jasonpjason @wahlgreens This is why you never take a vendor’s word for what needs to be opened on your firewall and web proxies. Unfortunately I don’t have an enterprise security stack at my house
@jasonpjason Yeah even if it supposedly was pioneered somewhere (doubtful), you can place the blame on SV companies as significantly spreading the trend.
@jasonpjason I mean, i work from home half the time already and my bosses hate that. We use Skype and Teams. They want us to start turning on our webcams so they can see our faces. We will see if that happens. I agree, as a technologist, this is an ongoing battle.
@jasonpjason @yukkuriyankey just do yourself a favor and use self hosted FLOSS
@jasonpjason @hacks4pancakes Well- if it is the mechanism for granting elevated privileges is it spyware or malware?
@jasonpjason @Spreadapedia Nothing a little piece of electrical tape doesn’t fix
@jasonpjason @ToothsSoup My therapist said she likes to use zoom cause it’s more secure?? That’s weird
