“Include China in New START” is not a proposal being made in good faith given that the minute you think about what it’d mean in practice, it falls apart. It’s an excuse to not extend New START bilaterally.

Good thread. The situation is much worse than the lack of media coverage implies. US and North Korean positions haven't actually changed in any meaningful way. There are two paths to preempt a future nuclear crisis but neither is being taken right now

How would including China in New START work? Under the treaty counting rules, China would have 0 deployed warheads. Would China be allowed to build up to the New START limit of 1,550 deployed warheads, which is much larger than China's estimated TOTAL stockpile of 280 warheads?

How big a deal is Indian ASAT? This is less about shooting down satellites and more about proving high-altitude “hit-to-kill” proficiency, which is the core competency required to get good at a range of things, including ballistic missile defense. That matters.

This is really good on the risk of #nuclear war between #India & #Pakistan. A small risk but with massive consequences. Agree on the trajectory of the relationship - at best the conflict can be managed rather than resolved.

Damn, I won't quibble with the # (which I would've thought lower), but the point is that we need more than a moratorium on testing. And we'll have to give something to get that, unless we're ok with an expanding nuclear arsenal over time

This seems pretty convincing. I await better post-strike satellite imagery but I feel like preponderance of evidence pretty clearly suggests some sort of “miss” in Tuesday’s IAF strike.

First nightfall and—soon—sunrise in South Asia since Pakistan’s retaliation for India’s strikes. India did not up the ante overnight, which is a good sign for now. Hopefully the next day will result in movement toward deconfliction and deescalation.
