A recent comment under one of my videos. Amazing how often I still hear "we were promised driverless cars and where are they!". I am just back from SF, where I played 'count the Waymos' with my kids. Such a big gap between where tech (in general) is and where many think it is.
Surprised the "mission-driven approach" to governing the UK has not attracted more criticism. It has clearly failed. And that raises big questions about whether academics, with little practical experience of strategy, are best placed to tell gov'ts how to act strategically.
A couple of hundred pages into this, thinking about the development of AGI. It is no atom bomb yet. But that sense of early hubris and intellectual excitement -- Bohr, Heisenberg, Schrödinger, Oppenheimer etc. -- is strikingly similar to the present moment. Also a great book.

It does seem very strange to me that a solicitor in the UK can publicly threaten to kill Jews -- and yet, if they say sorry, the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal is happy for you to keep your job.

I disagree. In fact, I would go further: we don't appreciate how bad things have become over the last 20 years. One statistic that stuns: average real wages in the UK, exc. London, are less than in the poorest US state, Mississippi. Until we see the crisis, no chance of reform.
