Learning to read is hard for more children than you might realize. It’s not about intelligence. Lots of very smart people have a tough time. They need direct/explicit instruction. Lots of children weren’t getting in 1998. They’re still not. nytimes.com/2022/09/01/opi…

ALL districts should be screening kids for dyslexia and informing parents. Three years of work on the Dyslexia Working Group and CDE is still playing politics with this. Infuriating.

Three years of work on the Colorado Dyslexia Working Group and CDE is still not committed to screening kids for dyslexia. Infuriating. I'm grateful for @drakos_l and her amazing daughter for continuing to stand up for what's right.

If upwards of 60% of kids in a (super) local control state are not being taught to read proficiently, then the state has the obligation to those kids to do something about it.

SB21-151, Literacy Curriculum Transparency, was signed into law yesterday. It requires districts and schools to publish (via a link on their website) which curriculum and intervention is used, how many kids on Read Plans they have, and how they spend their Read Act $. #edcolo

Tax payer funds being used to lobby tax payer funded legislators against the best interests of Colorado students (whose parents pay those taxes & then also pay for private dyslexia testing & tutoring!) Beyond disappointing.

Two years later and Colorado has yet to screen a single child for dyslexia. The long awaited pilot program now will only screen children (through an MTSS process) in 3 smaller sized schools. Beyond frustrating.
