In 2017, the Michigan House of Representatives passed a bill (HB #5619) that states: “A school board or its designee shall consider using restorative practices as an alternative or in addition to suspension or expulsion under this act".

Although a step in the right direction, HB #5619 still leaves too much room for administrative interpretation. Restorative Justice must be written into law and not just "considered" if we truly want to combat the School to Prison Pipeline in our community.
