Many supporters of 'wind power' tell me all its many deficiencies can be overcome with more 'battery storage' H'mm Here's the 'biggest battery in Europe'. Cost £75,000,000. Covers 20,000 sq m. Could power UK for 15 seconds We'd need 6,000 to power us for a day Practical?
A coal or natural gas peaker plant with 196 MW capacity would cost around $196 million and that isn't counting the cost of fuel to run it. You can install 196mw of solar for about $196m and then $75m for the battery and you erase your fuel costs forever. Tesla's megapack business is exploding for a reason and that is because it makes economic sense.
@latimeralder Chemical batteries are very expensive, and they are good for peak shaving. Other forms of power storage are better, for example, hydroelectric, and other gravity solutions, these have the advantage of better cost to energy stored and cheaper lateral volume scalability.
@latimeralder I have a battery in my phone. My computer. Three for my drilling machine and other tools. Two neighbors have batteries in their cars. Washing machines will follow. There already are billions of batteries. That will soon quadruple. They are getting cheaper and better.
@latimeralder i may be wrong, but I suspect that battery could not power the UK for 15 seconds because it couldn't discharge fast enough. Rather, it's something more like it could power 5% of the UK (if that) for 5 min.
@latimeralder For comparison, tell us how much land area is needed for a nuclear power plant. And a coal power plant. And a biomass plant. And don't forget to compare the pollution each one creates.
