Subtle bug when translating code from @MATLAB to Python. numpy.var returns the biased estimate and numpy.cov returns the unbiased estimate by default. Whereas in MATLAB, both var and cov returns the unbiased estimates by default. @numpy_team. Consistency is useful.

I am curious if anyone has pointers to papers that they think might be award candidates in the "possible using the compute that was available 10 years ago", or something similar. These could be more interesting than those that are just made low-hanging by new compute power.
