Have you heard of the remarkable crop system referred to as 'Three Sisters'? 🌽🌱 This sustainable method involves planting corn, beans, and squash together. Each crop plays a vital role: cornstalks provide support, beans enrich the soil, and squash leaves suppress weeds.
Packed with fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals, Manomin promotes digestion, muscle growth, and sustained energy. It's a heart-healthy choice, low in fat and cholesterol-free, supporting cardiovascular wellness. 🌾🌿 #HealthyChoice
🌍 The Manomin Project went international! Members of our team attended the 6th International EcoSummit Congress in Gold Coast, Australia. Ph.D. candidate Samantha Mehltretter and Dr. Andrea Bradford shared their expertise on Manomin conditions and restoration. #ManominProject
New Book Coming Soon! "Mnoomin maan’gowing, The Gift of Mnoomin" by Brittany Luby, illustrated by Joshua Mangeshig Pawis Steckley, and translated by Mary Ann Corbiere will be released on October 3, 2023. Make sure to mark your calendars! 📚 #MnoominMaangowing #NewBookRelease
Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day! 🌿 Today, we honour and celebrate the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. Embrace traditions, learn from Indigenous voices, and support initiatives. Let's foster reconciliation, understanding, and respect 🧡
Meet Autumn Perry - our newest Research Assistant! 🌿 Autumn is pursuing a Master's in Public Issues Anthropology with a focus on One Health, where she explores cultural responses to environmental change and the interconnectedness of the environment, animals, and humans.
Happy Indigenous History Month! Join us in honouring the vibrant cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. Let's learn, appreciate, and celebrate their rich history. 🪶 #IndigenousHistoryMonth #CelebrateCulture
Happy International Women's Day! Today, we honour all women who make a positive impact in their communities and the world. #IWD2023 #ManominProject #WomenPower
Today we shine a spotlight on Curve Lake First Nation & their Manomin & Indigenous Food Sovereignty Celebration. A celebration of eating, planting, gathering, and preserving traditional foodways while supporting cultural revitalization. Painting by: Chief Lady Bird
"The traditional ecological knowledge of Indigenous harvesters is rich in prescriptions for sustainability. They are found in Native science and philosophy, in lifeways and practices.” – Robin Wall Kimmerer
Indigenous Ecology is a very crucial part of science not only for Indigenous communities but for the world. Indigenous people have always lived off the land and studied their surroundings, ensuring they only take what is needed for their family. Illustration by: Luisa Rivera
Exciting news! Brittany Luby's collection 'Manomin: Sustaining Anishinaabe-Aki' and a children's book about Manomin will be published by UBC Press and Groundwood Books in the coming months. Follow us for updates on the releases. #Manomin #UBCPress #GroundwoodBooks
The 13th moon of the lunar calendar, Mnidoons Giizis (Big Spirit Moon), represents purification and healing for all creation. It's a time to receive guidance on the universe's healing powers and integrate them into our understanding of truth. Painting by: Clayton Samuel King
Today is the winter solstice, a special time celebrated by Indigenous cultures as a time of renewal and connection to nature. Let's honor and appreciate the rich traditions of Indigenous peoples and learn more about their cultures. #WinterSolstice #IndigenousCulture
Why is Manomin (Wild Rice) so important to Indigenous people? For many years Ojibwe people have harvested manomin to feed their families and make trades between different nations. Ojibwe people relied on manomin as a staple of their diet. Photo credit: Annmarie Geniusz
The twelfth moon of the lunar calendar appears in November and is referred to as ‘Mnidoons Giizis Oonhg’ or ‘Little Spirit Moon’. The Mnidoos Giizi Oonhg moon represents a time of healing. #LunarCalendar #LittleSpiritMoon #IndigeounsHistory #IndigenousTraditions #Lunar
Meet Shawn Adler, a Canadian chef in Toronto, Ontario. Adler has a deep love for traditional Indigenous food. His business, the Pow Wow Café, is the only restaurant specializing in Pow Wow cuisines and is famously known for its’ “NDN Tacos.” Photo credit: Tiffany Mayer
Today, we honour the Indigenous men and women who fought in the First and Second World Wars and Korean Wars. We want to express our gratitude to everyone who has served in the military, both past and present. We appreciate your bravery and courage. #LestWeForget
Why has Manomin declined over the years? Over the last century, Manomin habitats have decreased by roughly one-third. Some researchers believe this decline is caused by water dams, which affect water levels, logging, and shoreline erosion, causing the water chemistry to change.
For some, the eleventh moon in the lunar calendar is the Mshkawji Giizis (Freezing Moon), which appears in October. This moon represents our journey and how we should allow ourselves time to learn the sacred teachings to keep our traditions thriving. #LunarCalendar #FreezingMoon
