Apple is exploring several different directions in headsets: a Vision Pro 2 and cheaper model; A headset that moves processing & battery to an iPhone; Non-AR smart glasses; AirPods with cameras plus AI and, of course, the holy grail standalone AR glasses. bloomberg.com/news/newslette…
@markgurman IMHO they took this path because it's the safe bet. Apple isn't trying to beat anyone to building a standalone AR headset, they just want to have one ready when they can make decent margins and developers have already built enough apps for VisionOS.
@markgurman Where is all the app development that was expected on the Vision Pro??
@markgurman I can’t believe even Snap outpaced Apple in AR. Not even talking about Meta… Tim Cook fell behind on both AI and AR, quite a feat considering these are the future of mobile computing. He reminds me more and more of Steve Ballmer...
Apple is living on old merits and tend to get a lot of credit for products (such as cars) they might one day make—but when was the last time they released something that was impressive? The race is on to build both the “iPhone” for the AI-first era, and the ideal AI embodiment. I wish Apple would be the winner, but under their current structures I would consider the chances slim.
@markgurman Even if Apple develops what you call a "Holy Grail" AR Glasses even if they are "Cheaper" they still must give most consumers a use case as a reason to buy. Im Just not seeing it.
I like my Vision Pro and while it is a technically impressive device, at the same time I feel Apple unnecessarily held it back with certain design choices. The lack of a well designed head strap, the poor facial interface debacle (most owners know about this) the lack of video/data input, lack of native SteamVR support (ALVR isn't native), limited Apple environment access for 3rd party apps, lack of native console support, poor guest mode experience, lack of multiple profiles, lack of multiple screens in virtual display mode, lack of native apps like YouTube, Netflix, etc, the list goes on and on. They could have an absolute beast of a device if they opened it up and made a few design changes that majority of owners have been requesting since day one. It's 9 months in and we're just NOW starting to get basic functions like full mouse support in VisionOS 2.0.
@markgurman They saw Zuck's glasses last week and felt what Google felt in 2007 after seeing Jobs unveil the iPhone
@markgurman why is apple even discussing this? meta has just demoed the next form factor after the phone. foldables might not even matter any more. release apple Ray-Bans asap to kill meta's chances at building consumer loyalty and an ecosystem.
@markgurman Those Birth Control Glasses ain't it.
@markgurman Apple definitely should release AI glasses like the Meta Ray Bans. By far now the best AI wearable.
@markgurman Apple Vision Pro 2 would be interesting if it comes at a cheaper price
@markgurman Apple like button-up approach, building foundation first and putting everything together when everything is ready. This might make Apple look behind on certain tech, but they can already monetize by putting those small components in existing products.
@markgurman After all that they will release another iPhone 11 clone
@markgurman Any words on when the MacBook event will be held?
@markgurman The Quest resolution is so bad once you tried the Vision Pro.. You won't want to touch the Quest again.
I was so excited to buy the Vision Pro & would have bought it if it was released in 🇨🇦 as the same time as 🇺🇸. But given the delayed rollout it became apparent through feedback of 🇺🇸 buyers that the daily use case for such an expensive device was not there. It’s disappointing since I truly like to try new devices & see them improve over time but at the current price point & all the feedback about them sitting on most owners shelves more often than not, I’ve decided to pass on Vision Pro.
@markgurman Apple it’s not always first but for sure it’s always better. Consumer also wants a product in the Apple ecosystem, something that Meta can’t offer. But I like how Meta its competing with Apple, Ray-Ban and cheaper AR devices it’s a good move. In the end the consumers will win.
@markgurman What an utter bullshit clickbait title. Ofcours Apple wants to make standalone AR glasses. Ofcours they are developing exactly that. But they’re not showing what they’re not shipping. Vision Pro is delivering this UX in the MDP that can at this point in time. Orion isn’t shippin
@markgurman These glasses from Meta are fire 🔥 compared to Vision Pro… I love apple but Vision Pro is just not worth the money plus it looks like you’re going for a snorkelling 🤿 😅 Looks like Mark got this one better
@markgurman And, the meta glasses still cost 10 thousand dollars to make. It is unclear if they can reduce the cost to 1000 dollars soon.
@markgurman Apple is years ahead of meta in AR glasses. Years. They can ship glasses much better than that at this point. Just waiting for the perfect development I suppose.
@markgurman Apple Vision Pro has a horrendous form factor. I feel it too heavy and wired to a pocket battery makes it uncomfortable to me. What were they thinking? It’s shocking since Apple is incredible efficient packing tech in small devices (ie. Watch).
@markgurman What about face-id under display for iPhone 17 pro? Is it coming
@markgurman This should have been the path all along. @tim_cook it’s time to resign. Your ability to help create innovation is awful. Go buy an island somewhere with the millions of $ you’ve gotten from employing kids in sweatshops.
@markgurman Apple CaseID 102399702586 Danish apple company cheated with me. Provide damaged apple i phone.
@markgurman They were having fun with the Apple car and lost their way. I wonder who had the grate idea. 🧐
@markgurman Apple needs to invent something that’s awesome. The Vision Pro is a shitty device to wear.
@markgurman Die meisten iPhones werden nie ihre Leistungsgrenze erreichen.
@markgurman Why is it that every time a company presents something big, there is a news story like: "Apple is also doing it"? Is it so as not to discourage its users/potential buyers?
@markgurman I don’t think they have even a beta of the tech in META’s holograms.. but surely they’ll run to it now: Vision Air. And they do have a fair right to win.
@markgurman I'm glad if they are, but don't see how apple can follow a MVP route anymore without tarnishing their brand.
@markgurman Apple no longer seems to have the ability to create innovative new form factors. Even more worryingly they don’t seem to be able to develop existing software to create compelling new use cases eg for Watch or iPad, let alone AR. Hearing health on AirPods being an exception.
@markgurman Will it require 5 years of R&D or will Apple iterate faster?
