The United Nations has warned that approximately 25 square kilometres of land affected by recent earthquakes in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Nangarhar provinces are contaminated with explosive remnants of war. Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, 12th of September, Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said that ongoing aftershocks have significantly disrupted humanitarian response efforts in the affected regions. He emphasised that the need for emergency assistance — including clean water, food, temporary shelter, and medical services — remains critical. According to Mr. Dujarric, in Kunar’s Nurgal district, many families have been forced to spend nights outdoors in the rain due to the risk posed by aftershocks and the structural damage to their homes. The United Nations has called on all donors, aid organisations, and individuals with the capacity to assist, to step forward and support relief efforts aimed at helping those affected by the disaster.
