@helenjwc Routine problems have a predetermined method(s) to work them out. Like balancing an equation, changing the subject of a formula, long multiplication...

@helenjwc It would seem to me that a routine problem is one you’ve practiced a way to solve it, or seen lots of, so that it has become boring in some sense. Though I wonder if it really is a problem at all if you know how to solve it. Still what do you call a problem that isn’t a problem?
@helenjwc I've not tried answering this question before, so I'll have a go. A problem type the person charged with solving it hasn't routinely experienced before.

In the meantime, you will continue to find me building fluency and automaticity through social, play-based practices that infuse positive emotions into math spaces. End/
When their research comes out, I’ll be looking carefully at the methods section to see what they’re really doing. I have been taught by my research mentors to be cautious of: -claims that negate the common lived experience of people. - claims that haven’t been replicated. 11/
1️⃣ It is a dangerous practice in the science/research community to not believe people when they share their lived experiences. With countless people connecting their math trauma and anxiety back to timed math tests, that should immediately cause us to pause. 3/
I still hold the belief that timed math tests are: - risky (⬆️ potential for harm) - least effective tool for automaticity (absence of joy, play, social learning) But here’s my 2 big concerns reading people’s tweets from today … 2/
