I had an exponential decay problem on my last test where Ss had to solve for initial value. I set it up as 415=a(1-.12)^6. A student set it up as 415(1+.12)^6. Why doesn’t this give you the same answer? #mtbos #iteachmath

Exponential functions are BY FAR my favorite unit. In one day, we have talked about college loan interest rates, the opioid and orphan epidemic in Ohio and the use of cell phones by elementary age students, all on real data. My kids are LOVING it and learning that math is power!

Instead of "that was easy," I can say: "This looks familiar." "I've seen problems like this before." "I recognize this type of problem." "I know how to solve this kind of problem. Do you?" (Or "would you like me to share my ideas?" If a partner doesn't think it's easy).

Building on the work from @joboaler I've been having a lot of conversations with my students who keep announcing loudly, "That's easy!" As another kid pointed out, that can make you feel down on yourself if YOU don't find it easy... So I started suggesting replacements for this:

I am teaching triangle cong. this week using straws. For those of you who do this, how much do you guide Ss? Do you tell them to try and create a different triangle with 3 sides cong., or just let them play with broader questions and figure it out on their own? #mtbos #geomchat

I have a transfer student that insists that her previous teacher told her "x>5 or x<1" is the same as "5<x<1." This is incorrect, right? I believe that 5<x<1 would assume an "and" clause. I was confident in this, but she is so insistent that I am doubting myself. #MTBoS
